Coaching Carousel and Other Basketball News: 4.1.08
*Sean Sutton, the favored son who got the Oklahoma State kingdom from his dad, resigned from Oklahoma State. I’m sure he wasn’t pushed at all; and he’ll receive the remaining three years of his salary. It must be nice to coach basketball for a state school.
*A recount of the final moments of the Davidson loss to Kansas on Sunday, one of the most thrilling games I have ever seen. I like how Slam calls it the Stephen Curry Invitational. It’s his world, we’re just living in it. Meanwhile, Davidson ‘s ride might move them closer to the basketball big-time… Gonzaga of the east, one day. If you were wondering, Curry is staying at least one more year at school.
*Jim Christian moves from Kent State to Texas Christian. He likes football as much as TCU’s Horned Frogs do.
*Darrin Horn is officially moving from Western Kentucky to University of South Carolina. Insert “cocks” joke here. The Darrin Horn website is moving with him. Now, some contract talk:
Horn, 35, received a five-year contract with a guaranteed annual salary of $800,000. He will receive performance bonuses worth up to $335,000 that are tied to the NCAA tournament and postseason coaching awards.
Another incentive is based on attendance: Horn will receive $50,000 for each increase of 1,000 full-pay season tickets sold for men’s basketball. (The baseline is 9,322 tickets sold for this past season.) Athletics director Eric Hyman said the attendance bonus was his idea and compared it to profit-sharing.
South Carolina agreed to pay Horn’s Western Kentucky buyout of $200,000. Hyman also indicated he would adhere to a clause in Horn’s WKU contract that stated if Horn left, his new school would have to play WKU in a home-and-home series over four years.
*Duke freshman Taylor King is transferring… somewhere. He had previously committed to UCLA and was recruited by USC, Gonzaga, and Villanova. I hear he’s also interested in Pepperdine and St. John’s – APRIL FOOLS!
*A story on Dante Milligan, who grew up in NY, and is excited to come back with U Mass for the NIT Final Four.
*Jeff Goodman catches us up with Kent State after Jim Christian leaves for Texas Christian, Curry, Larrange, Darrin Horn, and concerns about the Indiana job. Which there should be:
Sources indicate that Bennett also heard that three Indiana players failed drug tests this year. He was also well-aware that this would be a rebuilding process since the Hoosiers will lose D.J. White and likely Eric Gordon.
There may be more departures depending on what happens – Jordan Crawford and Armon Bassett could opt to transfer – and the chances of Devin Ebanks ever arriving on campus are slim at best.
Crawford and Bassett will transfer; they missed meetings and violated team rules during the season.
*And for some reason, Isiah Thomas keeps getting mentioned for the Indiana job. Unlike apparently everyone else, I don’t think that’s such a bad move for either party. Isiah can coach well enough to stay in the NBA (his teams tend to score, even if his GM abilities are awful), and John Calipari was once the crappy coach of the Nets; doesn’t mean he was a terrible college coach, where coaching mistakes are less magnified. Working at the top level of worldwide basketball has to mean something.
