Your Team Needs Zach Feinstein

7 05 2008

I Feinstein with the spinthink Washington University’s Zachary Feinstein should be a late second round pick. Prediction: he will dominate in China before returning as a defensive specialist and some team’s resident 5′8″ engineer. Teams out there - you want his rights. Kudos to you, man, for continuing to put my alma mater, the WU, on the map.

But Zach, you should show them your athleticism. Dunk more. And why weren’t you on the D-III national championship squad this year?

Obama plays Basketball With the UNC Tar Heels

30 04 2008

I think Obama loafed a little on defense, but he works to get open. Uses screens well, willing to pass. For a 46 year old man, I’d give him a B+.

From the AP:

The Democratic presidential candidate played hoops with the University of North Carolina team on Tuesday, a Final Four squad that cut the 46-year-old some slack.

“These guys move very fast,” puffed Obama, as he raced up and down the court with the much younger and much bigger college players, many of whom dwarfed the 6-foot-2 Obama.

The Illinois senator is a workout enthusiast, and basketball is his chosen game. He decided to open his day with the Tar Heels, including star Tyler Hansbrough, a 6-foot-9 All-American who spent part of his morning guarding Obama.

At one point, Obama slipped past Hansbrough for a layup, which rimmed out. Ever the realist, Obama recognized what had happened.

“Hansbrough went easy on me,” Obama said. “I thought I had it.”

Obama often plays pickup basketball games with local backers. He toured the Tar Heel sports complex with Coach Roy Williams, and conceded he had moved up a notch.

“Let me tell you, these guys are big and fast,” said Obama, catching his breath on the sidelines. In his March NCAA tournament picks, Obama selected North Carolina, but the Tar Heels lost to eventual champion Kansas in the semifinals.

Though the players, who were relishing banging on each other, gave Obama his shots, he was unable to score. At one point he dished off a nifty, behind the back pass that nearly set up an assist.

Neither side kept score.

News Articles on StJ Transfers

22 04 2008

NY Post’s Lenn Robbins:

According to a statement released yesterday by St. John’s coach Norm Roberts, Wright, the Red Storm’s best 3-point shooter, was leaving “because of the recent discovery of an illness involving a member of his immediate family.”

But when reached by The Post, Wright acknowledged that although a disc problem that has been plaguing his mother’s back since mid-season had gotten worse, his more pressing reason for leaving was the chance to have a more prominent role.

Daily News’ Roger Rubin:

The reasons for the two transfers are different, but Wright’s departure will be more damaging. The 6-1 sophomore guard was third on the team in scoring with a 9.1-point average and the Red Storm’s top three-point threat, making 40.2%….

Cavataio, a 6-4 freshman swingman, averaged 1.4 points and 1.2 rebounds in about six minutes a game. Though he likes St. John’s and has enjoyed his time at the school, he wants to be part of a program where he can play and contribute more….

Four of the six recruits in his first class departed to play elsewhere. Every member of his third recruiting class - Qu’rraan Calhoun, Avery Patterson, Derwin Kitchen and now Wright - will not finish with St. John’s.

“These are the kinds of this that happen when you’re rebuilding a program from the very bottom,” Roberts said Monday. “Some of the people you recruit are being brought in to fill roster spots with the best talent available.”

I don’t even know what that quote means. At year 4, with a 7 member class, he needed Cav to fill out a roster spot? Why not save it for the next year, then? And Larry? He did more than fill out the roster spot… is he going to get someone better to shoot the basketball?!

An apt description from the comic Bizarro.

Los Spurs? Los Suns? Uhhh…

11 03 2008

Photos and story thanks to UniWatch. I just heard about this: the Suns and Spurs added “Los” to their names on the front of their jerseys to honor the Latino community.

Here’s Steve Nash and Shaquille O’Neal:

Los Suns Shaq and Nash

And Argentine Professor of Awesome Basketball Manu Ginobili:

It’s hard to get people to go to these late season games, isn’t it, NBA.

Reason Eleven Why the Giants Beat the Packers

22 01 2008

The victory was predicted in Eddie Murphy’s classic Coming to America:

Prince Akeem: Sir, did you happen to catch the professional football contest on television last night?
Cleo McDowell: No, I didn’t.
Prince Akeem: Oh sir, the Giants of New York took on the Packers of Green Bay. And in the end, the Giants triumphed by kicking an oblong ball made of pigskin through a big “H”. It was a most ripping victory.

Terrell Owens, as a Coors Commercial.

15 01 2008

Terrell Owens crying gets turned into a Coors Light commercial in the style that has lampooned cryin’ Dick Vermeil, angry Denny Green, and Jim “Playoffs?!” Mora. Note for the Kids: I don’t condone the drinking of Coors light. The beer is swill, and the family is a bit too right-wing for my tastes. But, enjoy a TO!
